The chemical composition of talcum is Mg3Si4O10(OH)2 This magnesium silicate is present as a white odourless, tasteless and water-insoluble powder. Talcum has drying, water-repellent, skin-conditioning, greasing and adsorbing properties and is chemically inert. This powder gives a soft skin feeling, reduces friction and prevents skin rashes. Talcum is used in cosmetics for powder-based products and as an excipient in the manufacture of tablets.
