The mahonia is a plant species from the barberry or sourthorn family (Berberidaceae). The main constituents of the common mahonia root include alkaloids (e.g. berberine, oxyacanthine, berbamine) and proteins. In folk medicine it is said to have positive effects on fever, diarrhea, dyspeptic complaints, inflammatory complaints in the area of the bile ducts and urinary tract, but also on skin diseases.
