The marshmallow (Althaea officinalis L.) belongs to the mallow family (Malvaceae). The marsh mallow’s health promoting effects have already been known in antiquity. The marshmallow leaves, roots and blossoms contain mucins. Owing to these mucins, marshmallow is used for irritations of the throat. It is further used for irritations of the oropharyngeal area as well as the gastro-intestinal system.
