Mannitol

Mannitol is a crystalline sugar alcohol with a pleasant flavour. Therefore, mannitol is often used as a filling agent for the capsule and tablet production. This sugar alcohol has mild laxative properties and is therefore suitable for improving the bowel movements. Only 7.2 % of the orally ingested mannitol is absorbed via the gastrointestinal tract, which means that its strong osmotic properties are only partially effective. Thus, if taken orally, mannitol only contributes slightly to an increase of the urine volume and to diuresis.
