Manna ash, also called heavenly bread, is a plant species of the ash genus. It owes its name to the brownish, slightly bitter juice that oozes from scratched branches and twigs and hardens quickly. The juice contains the sweet-tasting alcohol mannitol as its main ingredient. Also contained are D-glucose, fructose and resins. It is known that manna is a laxative for gentle bowel emptying. Swedish herbal mixtures also often contain manna.
