Lovage is said to be hemostatic, diuretic, antispasmodic, expectorant and diaphoretic. The roots contain plenty of essential oils with up to 70% alkyl phthalides, which is why the drug is often used as a flushing therapy for urinary tract infections and to prevent kidney gravel.
