DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a natural product and a metabolic intermediate in the biosynthesis of the sex steroids androgen and oestrogen. It is an endogenous substance primarily produced in the inner layer of the adrenal cortex. However, DHEA production declines dramatically with age. For comparison: a 60-year-old person has only one-fifth of the DHEA concentration of a young adult. Smoking, stress, and obesity further reduce DHEA levels. As circulating DHEA concentrations are associated with the ageing process, this prohormone has gained a reputation as a fountain of youth that may counteract certain effects of ageing.
