Purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) contains, amongst other things, essential oil, tannins and glycosides. Already in ancient times, the plant was used as a medicinal plant. Due to its high tannin content, purple loosestrife is used in folk medicine for diarrhea, eczema and to stop bleeding. The use as a hemostatic remedy gave the plant its name.
