The carnation root (Geum urbanum) belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae). The carnation root contains mainly tannins and essential oil with the main component eugenol. Hildegard von Bingen used carnation root as an aphrodisiac. In folk medicine, the plant is used for diarrhea, stomach problems, loss of appetite and as a tonic.
